Weak Signal, Slow Speeds, Or Disconnection Issues

Applies to: HaLowLink Access Point and paired devices (camera/extender)

Range and interference issues affect essentially every wireless product on the market, not just HaLowLink. Wi-Fi HaLow's sub-GHz signal handles walls and distance noticeably better than standard 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi, but it isn't immune to the same fundamentals such as distance, obstructions, and radio interference.

The Access Point is designed for indoor use only and has no IP (weatherproofing) rating. Placing it outdoors, in direct sun, or in damp areas isn't a supported use case and can itself cause reliability issues and void your warranty.

Symptoms

  • Video feed from the camera is laggy, low-resolution, or buffers.
  • Devices connect but frequently drop and reconnect.
  • Signal is fine near the Access Point but weak or absent further away.

Common causes and fixes:

Distance and obstructions

Sub-GHz signals pass through walls and floors better than higher-frequency Wi-Fi, but signal still weakens with distance and with dense materials (concrete, brick, metal cladding, large mirrors, appliances).

  • Move the Access Point to a more central, elevated location if possible, rather than a corner or inside a cabinet.
  • If a specific room or camera location consistently struggles, try relocating the paired device a few metres, or closer to a line of sight to the Access Point.

Antenna position

Make sure the antenna is upright and fully tightened, not resting against a wall or metal surface, which can reduce it's effectiveness.


Too many devices on one Access Point

If you've paired several cameras or extenders to one Access Point, throughput is shared. Symptoms like buffering video are more likely under heavy simultaneous load, so avoid staggering high-bandwidth activities where possible.

Router-side issues

  • Reboot your home router and modem — this usually clears up a large share of "slow" or "dropout" complaints across all networking hardware.
  • Check whether your router firmware is up to date. You can check this via the router's User Interface by accessing the IP address via a PC. The IP address is usually located on the bottom of the router. Refer to t he router's manufacturer for support.

Overheating

The Access Point (and Extender) feature built-in vents that let heat escape, providing passive cooling. Do not store these devices in confined spaces to avoid overheating. 

Firmware

Make sure the Access Point and paired devices are on the latest firmware. Performance and stability fixes are typically delivered via the app-managed OTA update process. See the firmware troubleshooting article if updates are not completing.
