False Motion Detection (Recordings With No Real Activity)

Symptoms: Camera sends alerts or records clips when nothing meaningful happens — shadows, insects, blowing leaves, rain, or headlights.

HaLowLink Cameras uses PIR (Passive Infrared) motion detection, the same technology found in professional security systems, to detect movement as soon as something comes within the field of view. PIR reacts to real-world heat and motion in real time, so you're notified the moment someone approaches your door, driveway, or property line.

PIR Limitations

Like all technologies, PIR has its limits. It's sensitive to heat rather than people specifically, so passing cars, animals, or even sun-warmed foliage swayed by the wind can trigger a detection. When paired with our AI person/vehicle filtering, this is significantly reduced but the camera still briefly wakes to analyse the event, then decides whether it's worth alerting you about.

Possible Causes:

  • Motion sensitivity set too high for the environment
  • Camera aimed at moving foliage, flags, pool reflections, or a road
  • Masking zone not configured to exclude irrelevant areas
  • PIR sensor picking up heat from nearby vents or metal surfaces
  • Firmware is out of date

Steps to Resolve:

  1. Reduce Sensitivity
Open the app and lower the motion sensitivity one level at a time, testing after each change until the false triggers are significantly reduced.
  2. Add Masking Zone
Set up masking zone to exclude trees, streets, or reflective surfaces. Note that the masking zone will still trigger the camera to wake, but not record.
  3. Control the Environment

Re-organise the surroundings, such as pot plants, flags, items with hot surfaces..etc can help eliminate false detections.

  4. Reposition the Camera

Reposition or re-angle the camera so it isn't facing the road, direct sun during sunrise/sunset, or shift it away from moving objects (flags, wind chimes, pool surfaces).

  5. Update the Firmware

Check and install the latest firmware update via the app. Detection accuracy is frequently improved in updates.

Still having issues?

If sensitivity is at the lowest setting, zones are correctly configured, firmware is current, and false triggers persist at a consistent rate, raise a ticket with the support team to help diagnose the issue.
